Anchor……

boatToday I spent the day working on a brochure for the My Epilepsy Story. I was excited and frustrated all at the same time. I must say that I am thankful for my WONDERFUL web designer, Andy McClung of AM Perspectives (www.amperspectives.com), who gave me a great idea about getting the brochure done quickly. Thank you Andy for all your hard work and encouragement as I have tried to navigate through these rough waters of the website, Facebook, Twitter, and now brochures….Ugh, so not fun at times!

All this to say that as I have been navigating through this journey of the nonprofit and at times it has been overwhelming with all the things that I realized that I didn’t know. I have been listening to The Tenors and a song that hit home for me today was “ANCHOR ME”. I was once told that an anchor is something that drags you down, but this evening I decided to look up the meaning of anchor and here it is:

Anchor:

  1. a device usually of metal attached to a ship or boat by a cable and cast overboard to hold it in a particular place by means of a fluke that digs into the bottom
  2. a reliable or principal support
  3. something that serves to hold an object firmly
  4. the member of a team (as a relay team) that competes last

Here are the lyrics to the song as well:

Anchor Me
by The Tenors

All my soul is troubled
All my will is worn
Tired and discouraged
Trampled on and torn

Every breath a battle
Every step a war
My heart-broken vessel
This night an angry storm

When sadness crashes like an ocean
When fear is deeper than the sea
When I am swallowed by the darkness
Will you come and anchor me?

I cannot see through this
Can you be my eyes?
I’m completely hopeless
Can you shine a light?

I have no more strength left
Can you stand and fight?
I’m dying in this doubt
Can you be my faith tonight?

When sadness crashes like an ocean
When fear is deeper than the sea
When I am swallowed by the darkness
Will you come and anchor me

Hold me still and hold me close
Until it all passes away
I beg you not to let go

All I really have to know
Is that you are here
And I am not alone

When sadness crashes like an ocean
When fear is deeper than the sea
When I am swallowed by the darkness
Will you come and anchor me?

(When sadness crashes like an ocean)
When fear is deeper than the sea (Deeper than the sea)
When I am swallowed by the darkness
Will you come and anchor me?

I see the meaning of an “anchor” as something good not bad……..I hope that I am a positive anchor for others. So as I think of my journey with epilepsy, my beautiful family, and the organization, I am thinking….. Am I an anchor? Who’s my anchor? Did I have an anchor that I pulled up and threw out because it put me where I didn’t want to be at the moment? Who’s your anchor? Are you an anchor to others?
